The Log Building (presently located in museum)
Law and order, and indeed all government, as we have seen, was established first through provincial means when British Columbia was still a colony controlled, although remotely, by the British Colonial Secretary in London, who appointed a governor and other officials.
In 1871, British Columbia joined the Confederation of Canada and so Customs and such matters became a federal charge. The province set up a responsible Legislature for internal affairs, and found it had much to look after. Local administrators, or government agents, were appointed.
In 1892 a government building of heavy logs was put up in Osoyoos, with living quarters for the government agent, and an annex of two cells for a jail. The seat of authority was moved to Fairview in 1898 with the great influx of population there, so this strong building remained more or less unused till 1917, when the three families in the area, in need of a school, quietly appropriated the jail.
It served until a new school (now the Village Office) was built in 1932. It had several temporary uses after that, was moved from its original site where the present third school stands and is now the main room of the museum. The fine axe-work and good fitting of the logs can still be seen.
