Ed Lacey (1891-1968)
Ed Lacey was born in 1891. He lived in the locality of Osoyoos beginning in 1911. After the death of his father, Nicholas Lacey, in 1917, Ed managed his father’s ranch on Kruger Mountain.
The Laceys raised grain and beef cattle until 1924 when the first purchase of purebred Jerseys was made. This was the start of the famous Sunflower Jerseys. By 1928, with the summers being too dry to even raise hay on Kruger Mountain, the Laceys moved to Osoyoos. Ed served as a road foreman at Kruger Mountain for about ten years, and after in the Oliver/Osoyoos districts. The Laceys retailed milk in the Osoyoos district from 1934 to 1947, when they sold the Jerseys.
Mrs. Lacey did a considerable amount of work preserving historical sites and data for Osoyoos. She was an active member of the Okanagan Historical Society and in 1954 was awarded the Good Citizenship Award by the Osoyoos Board of Trade. The Laceys are buried at the Pioneer Plot of the Osoyoos Cemetery.
