Adam Cumine
Adam Cumine was born in Barcelona, Spain. In 1927 he came to Osoyoos after hearing about the land development in Osoyoos that opened up for veterans of the First World War. A ditch for irrigation costing three million dollars and taking three to four years to construct was being planned. Cumine got twelve acres of land from the government. After building the flumes for the water, he found he had no more money. He left for the prairies and worked on a sheep ranch for a season.
Cumine returned to the Okanagan and married Constance Cosens in Kelowna and brought her to Osoyoos. The first crop was six acres of cantaloupes but the returns were disillusioning; 1050 lb crates brought in only $400. The next fall both went to work on the crop. This time they built a greenhouse for tomatoes and planted over 12,000 trees. After a frost warning, Cumine plowed a light layer of dirt to protect the plants for three nights of frost. They hardly lost 10% of the 4000 plants and came up with the first tomatoes in B.C. in 1929. Cumine purchased another ten acres of orchard and built a large house where they lived until 1949.
Involved in the packinghouse, Anglican Church, Red Cross, and a local army, The Pacific Coast Rangers, the Cumines were great contributors to the Osoyoos area. Mr. and Mrs. Cumine retired in 1951.
