Donald McCrae (1889-?)
Donald Gordon McCrae was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1889. In 1929, he purchased some farmland near the present townsite of Osoyoos and in 1930 he moved here to stay. McCrae hired a man to take care of his farm while he ran the Keremeos Irrigation District for two years.
McCrae was responsible for surveying and laying out the townsite of Osoyoos in the 1930s when the site was moved. Here he ran into opposition from a politically powerful of individuals who owned land across from the lake, and who wanted the townsite there. McCrae prevailed and the present townsite of Osoyoos was laid out exactly as he had drafted it, including the extremely wide streets on Main Street.
In 1932, McCrae became manager of the South Okanagan Lands Project, where he served as the manager for fifteen years. After resigning in 1947, he worked for the Water and Power Bureau of Canada for a couple years. He became a farmer again until 1966, when his wife’s illness forced him to retire. He was a determined and dedicated contributor of to the growth of Osoyoos.
