"Katie" Lacey — 1900-1964

With the passing of Mrs. E. J. Lacey Sr. in Osoyoos early this year, the Okanagan Historical Society lost a beloved and valued servant; one who was dedicated to the preservation of the history of the area she made her home and a firm believer in the adage "Don't trust your memory, write it down," and holding fast to this belief she has enriched the pages of this journal.

Katie believed in research and accuracy in her reporting and was impatient with slovenly work. She was also a believer in things as well as words and her efforts played a large part in the establishment of the Osoyoos Museum, and for these efforts she was named honorary president of the Osoyoos Museum Society.

Mrs. Lacey was born in Bristol, England, and her family moved to Osoyoos in 1911. In 1918, as Katie Helps, she married Ed Lacey and they made their home on Kruger Mountain. They came to Osoyoos to live in 1928 where for her community work Mrs. Lacey was recognized by the Osoyoos Board of Trade as Good Citizen for 1954.

A look-out has been made on the new Richter Pass Highway to overlook Osoyoos Lake and the country east and south. It is sited on a part of the old Lacey pre-emption. The Oliver-Osoyoos branch of the society has made a request to the department of highways that it be named the Lacey Look-Out. There is every likelihood that the request will be favorably considered, thus a fitting memorial to a pioneer of a land she served so well.
