The Syilx and Secwepemc peoples lived in the Okanagan and Thompson valleys for thousands of years before the arrival of the fur traders in the early 19th century.
There were major Syilx villages at Oroville and Nk’Mip on Osoyoos Lake.

The name Osoyoos comes from the local Syilx (Okanagan First Nation) term for "the narrows", referring to the gap between the two spits where Highway 3 now crosses the lake.
There have been seven bridges at this place, starting with the construction of the Dewdney Trail in the 1860s.
