Sagebrush and greasewood (antelope bush) and rabbit-fish are the most conspicuous plants in this desert scene, with cactus among the scattered tufts of bunch-grass. There are a few ponderosa pines and cottonwoods and willows in favourable locations. Milkweed, a heavy stately plant along the roadsides, is typical of the region. It has pink flowers, thick grey leaves, rich latex-juice giving it its name, and beautiful seed-pods full of parachute-like seeds.
In early spring dwarf buttercups and yellow-bells brighten the lower hillsides, and later the elegant mariposa lily, mauve and tulip-like, comes to flower. The upper hillsides above the arid zone are brilliant in late spring with balsam-root sunflowers, while the lake has a sturdy rush called a tulee, formerly used by native Canadians to make mats for many purposes, including tent-walls. On the slough edges are bulrushes with great brown cat-tail fruits.
